How much does helicopter detailing cost?
Two Bell 407s that look identical on the ramp can be quoted a crew-day apart, and the difference is almost never the airframe. It is condition, access, and where the aircraft sits. A helicopter costs more to detail than its size suggests, because almost nothing on it is a flat panel you can work in long passes. You are around a rotor head, a mast, a tail boom, skids, and glazing that wraps most of the way round the cabin. Here is what moves your number, and what to ask before you commit.
Why there is no number on this page
A published figure does one of two things. Either it is wrong for most aircraft, because the same nominal job on two rotorcraft of the same model diverges sharply once condition and access are in the room, or it stops being a price and becomes a ceiling, and the work gets cut to fit it. Neither serves you. A vendor who quotes before seeing the aircraft, or at minimum a written scope and photographs, is guessing. They revise when the crew arrives, or they absorb it by doing less and hoping you do not look underneath. We quote against a written scope with the exclusions stated, and nothing reaches the invoice that was not on the quote.
What actually moves the number
Rotor head, mast and transmission deck
This is the line item with no fixed-wing equivalent. Bearings, seals, grease points and control linkages sit in a tight cluster at the top of the aircraft, and every one of them is somewhere water and product must not go. It is hand work at controlled moisture, with adjacent areas masked where required, and it is slow by design. A crew that cleans a rotor head quickly is either not cleaning it or not being careful.
The glazing, and the fact that most of it is acrylic
A helicopter carries proportionally far more transparency than a jet: chin bubbles, door windows, overhead panels, on some types a wraparound greenhouse. On most types that is stretched acrylic rather than glass. It marks at a fraction of the pressure, it crazes when the wrong solvent touches it, and it does not tolerate machine polishing the way glass does. Hand work, acrylic-safe chemistry, fresh towels far more often than anywhere else on the airframe. On a Robinson or an H125 the glazing carries much of the visible result.
Exhaust deposits, drip tracking, and how long they have been there
Two problems that arrive together. Exhaust residue bonds to the finish under heat, so a wash lifts the loose top layer and the shadow is back the same week. Removing it properly takes a dedicated treatment with dwell time, worked in stages rather than forced in one pass. Drip tracking from the head runs down the cabin roof, doors and boom and stains where it sits. Time is the multiplier here: the same aircraft after one missed cycle is a different job from the same aircraft after four. Where either has etched the paint you are into correction, and correction is machine work on a finish with a finite thickness.
Skids, cross-tubes and everything under the deck
Helicopters land where fixed-wing aircraft cannot, and it shows underneath. Skid shoes and cross-tubes, or wheels and gear legs, plus step areas and the belly, collect grass, grit, hydraulic weep and the film that settles under a transmission deck. Degreasing that properly means getting at it from below, with chemistry chosen for the substrate and control over where the runoff goes. Quote it in or quote it out, but know which, because it is the most commonly excluded part of a rotorcraft quote.
Where the aircraft is, and where it is parked
A hangar with power and water gives the best result for the least time on the clock. An open ramp at PDK in July adds wind and sun, which dry product before it can be removed properly and cost you re-work. A rooftop or confined pad is a different job again: no hose, often no outlet, everything carried up in a freight lift, and a weight limit on what can go up there. Distance counts too. We work the Atlanta fields and out to 269 miles for scheduled work, and a field two hours out is crew hours spent before a towel touches the aircraft, which is why out-of-metro work is usually grouped or run overnight.
A small cabin is not a fast cabin
Everything in a helicopter cabin is within arm's reach of a passenger, which is why it wears faster than a jet cabin of the same age. Harnesses, webbing, buckles and inertia reels all need cleaning and none of them can be soaked. Headliner, door cards and sill areas sit at touch height. A corporate S-76 or H145 cabin wants the same discipline as any cabin: leather, carpet, plated trim and painted panels, each a different chemistry and a different amount of moisture.
What the previous vendor left behind
A large part of this work is undoing the last one. Leather conditioned until it is tacky has to be stripped back before it can be treated properly again. Compound residue dries white in rivet lines along the boom and in fastener heads around the doors, and digging it out is slower than the polishing was. Glazing hazed by an ammonia-based cleaner or a reused towel may not come back at all. None of that is visible in a photograph taken from the good side.
Your window, and whether it is protected afterwards
A compressed deadline does not reduce the work, it adds crew, and on a rotorcraft there is a limit to how many people can usefully stand around one machine. Past that point the only remaining variable is scope. Air-medical, news and corporate shuttle aircraft flying several legs a day are the hardest to schedule around and usually end up as overnight work. Protection is its own decision: a coating needs a clean, corrected surface, controlled conditions and cure time, and none of that compresses honestly.
What the work actually consists of
A full interior and exterior on a turbine helicopter is crew-days, not an afternoon. The sequence is fixed: assess and photograph, protect vents, ports and static sources, then work top-down. Rotor head and mast by hand at controlled moisture, cabin roof and boom, then the airframe, then skids and underside last so the runoff goes where it should. Interior runs alongside on its own: harnesses, webbing and inertia reels, leather cleaned and conditioned back to its own sheen rather than glossed, carpet extracted without soaking the underlay, glazing hand-worked with acrylic-safe chemistry and fresh towels. Correction and brightwork are separate stages carrying their own hours. It is walked with you at the end against the written scope, and anything we chose to leave alone is explained rather than quietly skipped.
Questions to put to any vendor
Including us. If a vendor cannot answer these plainly, that tells you more than the number at the bottom of their quote.
- Is the rotor head, mast and transmission deck in scope, and how exactly do you clean it? It is the part most likely to be quietly excluded and the part most likely to cause damage. You want to hear hand work, controlled moisture and masking. A pressure washer and a general degreaser is the wrong answer.
- What are you using on the glazing, and how often do the towels change? Acrylic is the least forgiving surface on the aircraft. A vendor who names an acrylic-safe product and talks about fresh towels has done this before. Household glass cleaner is the wrong answer and anything ammonia-based is worse, because crazing and hazing do not polish out.
- Are the belly, skids and underside in or out? This is the most commonly excluded item on a rotorcraft quote, and the usual reason two quotes that look different on paper are for different jobs. Get it stated either way, in writing.
- What happens if the aircraft is worse than described when you arrive? Every vendor meets this. The honest answer is a revised written scope agreed before work starts. The dishonest ones are an addition that appears on the invoice, or the same quote with less work quietly done.
- What are your aviation liability limits, and will you send a certificate naming my operator and the FBO? A stand near a tail rotor or a main blade is a real risk, and FBOs and hangar landlords set their own acceptable limits. If a certificate of insurance cannot be produced on request, nothing else on the quote matters.
- Where will you get water and power, and who handles the runoff at my field? Wash-water handling is a compliance matter that varies by field and by ramp, and a rooftop pad has neither hose nor outlet. A vendor who has not asked this has not planned the job.
- Who is actually on the aircraft, and have they worked this type before? Rotorcraft punish generic technique. Ask for the type, not just the category. A crew that has done an H125 already knows where the drip tracks run and which surfaces will not take pressure.

- Why won't you give me a ballpark over the phone?
- Because a ballpark given blind is a guess, and you would hold us to it, rightly. Send the type, the airport, photographs of the glazing and the underside, and your deadline. You get a written number against a written scope, usually the same day.
- Is a helicopter cheaper to detail than a jet because it is smaller?
- No. Size is the weakest predictor on a rotorcraft; access is the strong one. Hand work around the head, mast, boom and glazing does not scale down with the airframe, and a light turbine single can take longer than a well-kept midsize jet exterior.
- Can you work on a rooftop or confined helipad?
- Yes, and it is a different plan. No hose, usually no outlet, a freight lift and a weight limit on what goes up. We work rinse-less with contained runoff and carry what we need. Tell us the building and the pad at the quoting stage, not on the day.
- Do you travel outside Atlanta?
- Yes. PDK, RYY, FTY, LZU and ATL are the home fields, and we cover Georgia fields out to 269 miles for scheduled work. Distance is part of the quote, so out-of-metro aircraft are usually grouped with other work in the area or run overnight.
- How often should a helicopter be detailed rather than just washed?
- It depends on where it lives and how hard it flies. Washing stops exhaust residue and drip tracking from bonding; detailing corrects what washing cannot reach. Most operators settle into a regular wash cycle with a full reset before the events that matter, such as an inspection, a sale or an owner trip.
- Do you quote the interior and exterior separately?
- Yes, and we will tell you which one is doing more damage to how the aircraft presents. On many rotorcraft the cabin and the glazing carry more of the impression than the paint does, so if only one is happening this cycle, that is usually where it should go.
- Can you do it overnight before a first flight?
- Often, yes. Overnight is the normal window for aircraft flying several legs a day, and it is scheduled rather than rushed. A same-day AOG dispatch is a different service with its own premium, quoted up front and never added to an invoice afterwards.
