Three chemistries, not three grades of the same thing
A wax sits on top of the paint. The next few washes and the next few de-icing events take it off, which is why it reads as protection and behaves as a photograph. A synthetic sealant bonds to the surface properly and lasts meaningfully longer, in months rather than weeks. A ceramic coating is a different material again: it cures to a hard, hydrophobic film bonded to the topcoat, and it sits above your clearcoat as a sacrificial layer. So the choice is not between three grades of one product. It is whether the airframe has a sacrificial layer at all.
The case for a coating is not gloss
Gloss is what gets sold and it is the least interesting part. The real argument is arithmetic. Aerospace basecoat-clearcoat systems build a clearcoat of roughly two to two and a half thousandths of an inch, and there is no way to add to it short of a strip and repaint. Correction spends that film outright, and every wash and wipe-down marks and abrades a little more of it. None of it comes back. A coating puts a renewable layer in the firing line, so the abrasion of the next several years lands on the coating rather than on the clearcoat. It also makes each wash less aggressive at source, because soil releases at lower pressure and with less mechanical work.
Be sceptical of any specific number of years
Coating life on an airframe is not a fixed figure, and a number quoted to you with confidence before anyone has seen the aircraft is a sales number. It depends on cycles flown, de-icing exposure, whether the aircraft is hangared, whether it is washed with chemistry compatible with the coating, and whether the coating is maintained. A coating that is never topped up and is scrubbed with a general-purpose degreaser will not reach its advertised life, and no one refunds the difference. Ask what the maintenance interval is before you ask what the warranty says.
What a coating does not do
It is not corrosion protection. A coating sits on the topcoat of the painted exterior, and corrosion is a structural matter governed by FAA AC 43-4B, which puts inspection frequency and treatment on the operator, the manufacturer's recommendations or the operator's own program. The AC ties routine washing to removing acidic airborne contaminants, and filiform corrosion under paint is inhibited by storing below 70% relative humidity. A coating makes those washes gentler on the finish. It does not replace them, it does not reach the belly soils that trap corrosive material against structure, and it does not see what is happening under the paint.
The failure mode is coating over defects
A coating is optically clear. It does not correct, hide or improve what is underneath it. It preserves it. Swirl haze, wash marring, etched water spots and oxidation all get sealed under a hard film designed not to come off. Undoing that means removing the coating and correcting the paint afterwards, which spends clearcoat twice for one result. So correction comes first, in the same visit, or the coating does not go on. If the paint is too far gone for preparation to be worth doing, that is a repaint conversation and not a coating one.
What changes the answer
Four things move this decision. A repaint already on the calendar makes coating the current paint pointless, because the new finish is the one worth protecting. A short ownership horizon does the same. An aircraft flown weekly and washed often gains far more than one that sits hangared and moves twice a quarter, because a coating is consumed by washes rather than by months on a calendar. And whether the aircraft is washed by people using the right chemistry decides whether the coating you paid for is the coating you still have in two years.
Why the coated route costs what it does
A coating is preparation, and preparation is crew-days. Wash, decontaminate, assess the paint under proper light, correct what is correctable, then apply and cure the film panel by panel with the airframe dry and hangared throughout. That is the same tier of work as a full interior and exterior on a midsize jet, which is a five-figure job before condition or deadline are factored in. A quicker version is not the same coating done faster. It is a different product with a different outcome. The cost that decides it is the cost of doing it twice: a coating laid over defects has to be removed and the paint corrected again, and that second correction comes out of a clearcoat film you cannot add to.
