Correction works inside the film. A respray replaces it
There is a clean technical line between the two. Correction removes defects within an intact film by levelling the clearcoat around them down to the base of the defect. That only works when there is sound, adherent film to level into. Aerospace basecoat and clearcoat systems build to roughly two to two and a half thousandths of an inch of clear, and that is the entire working budget for the life of the paint. It cannot be topped up. If the clearcoat is delaminating, crazed, chalking through to basecoat, or showing filiform corrosion tracking underneath, there is nothing sound to work into and abrasives have nothing to offer.
The repaint interval is a real number, and it bites
Paint manufacturers commonly recommend strip and repaint in the region of five to six years. Wider industry practice runs to about seven, with ten treated as the outside limit, and roughly four years where salt air is a factor. Running past the interval is not free. Corrosion develops under paint and stays hidden while the paint hides it, so the repair that eventually follows is more invasive than the repaint would have been. FAA AC 43-4B makes the point from the other side: filiform corrosion under paint is inhibited by storage below 70 per cent relative humidity and by washing off acidic airborne contaminants. Washing is not cosmetic maintenance. It is how an aircraft reaches its interval in a condition worth repainting.
What choosing wrong costs, in both directions
Correction on failing paint postpones the same decision by a few months. The chalk returns, the delamination carries on, and clearcoat the sound areas still needed has been spent on areas that are going to be stripped anyway. In the other direction, a respray on a finish that is merely tired takes five to seven weeks of availability you did not have to give up, and for a working flight department that downtime is the dominant cost regardless of what the shop invoices. The expensive mistake is rarely choosing the bigger job. It is buying the smaller one twice.
Composite panels do not behave like aluminium
Composite components require very specific film thicknesses, and because they flex in flight, paint that is wrongly specified on composite can crack and etch within a year of application. That cuts both ways. A respray quote that treats fairings, control surfaces and other composite panels as the same job as the fuselage skin is not a quote worth accepting. And correction over composite, already at a lower film build, has less margin than the metal either side of it. Readings are taken panel by panel for exactly this reason, not once on a door and applied to the airframe.
What changes the answer
Where the aircraft lives and how often it is washed move the interval before anything else does. Salt air shortens it. So does an aircraft washed only when it starts to look bad, because acidic deposits sit on the finish in between. Paint history counts for as much: how old the system is, whether it has been corrected before and how many times, and what the film reads now. A dark or high-contrast scheme shows every defect and invites one aggressive pass, which is the quickest way to spend material you will want in three years. If the aircraft is heading to market, the calculation shifts again, because a buyer prices the age of the paint whether or not it has just been polished.
The single-pass version is a different product, not a shorter one
Correction at a professional standard is measured before it starts, worked in staged passes matched to the paint system and its repaint history, and finished with protection so the result holds. That is crew-days, and it is priced as crew-days. The compound matters as much as the machine. Liquid waxes, polishes and polishing compounds intended for aircraft are qualified to standards such as Boeing D6-17487, whose battery includes seven-day sandwich corrosion testing between faying aluminium surfaces and a hydrogen embrittlement test to ASTM F519, four notched cadmium-plated specimens immersed for 150 hours at 45 per cent load. A consumer store product has not passed a test it was never submitted to. The afternoon job that reaches gloss by lunchtime is a different product: it gets to the same shine by removing more material, and the material does not come back. Bring a seven-year repaint forward to four and the difference is paid into a paint shop invoice and five to seven weeks of lost availability.
