The wear you can see lives in the topcoat
Most cabin seating leather is a finished material rather than a raw hide: color and protection sit in a topcoat over the grain. Nearly everything that makes a cabin look tired happens in that layer. Body oils at the headrest, denim dye on the seat pans, hand cream on the armrests, sun-hardening on the window side, and the dull grey film of accumulated soil that flattens a cream cabin. None of that is damage to the leather itself. It is a cleaning and refinishing problem, and a hide taken back to clean, rehydrated and given its finish back reads as new from two feet away. The exception is an aniline or lightly finished hide, which carries almost no topcoat and holds its color in the leather. We identify those before anything touches them, because they behave differently and forgive less.
Where reconditioning stops
Structural wear does not respond, and no product changes that. Cracked grain, a bolster worn through to the substrate where a knee lands on every boarding, a seam that has pulled: at that point the material is finished. The check is done with your hands rather than your eyes. Flex a panel between finger and thumb and look into the fold. Soil and a tired finish clean out of the fold; a fold that opens into fine white cracking is the grain failing, and refinishing will only sit on top of the fault. When we find that, we say so and stop. Spraying a topcoat over failed leather is the one job we turn down.
Color is a certification conversation, not a detailing one
Cabin materials are certified for flammability. Under 14 CFR 25.853 and its Appendix F, interior materials on transport-category aircraft are burn-tested in a vertical position: in the 60-second test the average burn length may not exceed six inches and the average flame time after the burner is taken away may not exceed fifteen seconds, with a shorter 12-second exposure applied to the materials the rule treats less severely. Put a different material onto a certified seat and somebody has to show that the new material meets the requirement and record it. Leather that met the requirement when it was installed, and has only been cleaned with compatible products, retains its properties. That is why the safe version of reconditioning restores the finish already on the hide, and why nobody should be spraying a new color into your cabin on the ramp.
The other way to lose a good hide is to clean it wrongly
Aggressive cleaning of seat covering material can remove the flame-retardant treatment. That is operator-side guidance, not a sales line, and it is why product choice is not a small decision. Solvents strong enough to shift a stain in one pass lift the topcoat along with the soil, and the prohibitions are specific: carpet and upholstery spotters containing trichloroethylene or MEK have no business in a cabin. The OEM handbooks are blunt about the discipline. Gulfstream's completion center maintenance handbook devotes chapter 12 to cabin cleaning and carries separate procedures for wood, granite, Lexan, plating, stainless steel, leather, vinyl, Aermat rubber, carpet and fabric. It tells you not to take bleach aboard at all, and it tells you to test on an inconspicuous area first, because two fabrics of the same fibre content can behave differently. We work to the same rule. Test panel first, cabin second.
The failure mode: buying a season
The wrong choice is nearly always the same one. A heavy pigmented coating goes over leather that had already failed, and for a few weeks it looks convincing. Then it cracks along the faults underneath, because a topcoat flexes with the hide and this hide is already splitting, and it lifts first at the bolster that takes the load. The owner now pays twice. An interior shop has to remove the added finish before it can start, and the cabin has spent the months in between looking worse than it did at the outset. An inspector reads a lifting recolor the way they read a lifting paint repair, and they discount for what it might be hiding.
What the work actually involves
Reconditioning at this standard is crew-days, not an afternoon. Every panel is assessed and test-cleaned, soil comes off in stages rather than with the strongest thing in the van, the hide is rehydrated and given time to take it up, and only then is the finish restored with materials compatible with what is already on the leather. A wipe-over and a spray is a different product, not a lighter version of this one: it treats the whole cabin as one surface and one chemistry, where the cabin is eleven material problems that happen to sit next to each other. The standard exists because the failure runs in one direction only. Over-clean a certified interior and you have not produced a poor result, you have altered a material. Rush a recolor and the next owner pays an interior shop to strip it before the real work begins. We would rather spend the hours than hand back a hide that has been changed.
