Treating cabin odour at source, or masking it with fragrance

Treat the source. Fragrance does not remove an odour, it adds a second smell on top of the first, and the first one returns the moment the cabin is warm, humid and occupied. Odour is a physical thing sitting somewhere aboard: carpet, underlayment, seat foam, a galley drain, a lavatory seal, the ducting. Until that material is found and dealt with, nothing has been fixed. Masking is not a lighter version of odour removal. It is a different product, and it is not a treatment.

Odour is an object, not an atmosphere

Cabin odour is always a material sitting somewhere, and the list of usual suspects is short enough to work through. Carpet and the underlayment beneath it, holding a spill that went straight through. Seat foam, which absorbs and then gives back. The galley and its drains. The lavatory, its service line and its seals. The air distribution ducting and its filters. Residue in a sidewall behind a trim panel. Every one of those releases more of what it holds as the cabin gets warmer, more humid and more occupied, which is exactly when you least want it. That is why a cabin can smell fine cold on the ramp and be unbearable thirty minutes into a leg.

The order of operations cannot be reversed

Find it, remove it, then treat whatever is left. Contaminated material comes out or is cleaned through properly rather than wiped over. The galley and lavatory are dealt with as systems, not as surfaces. Filters are addressed rather than ignored. Only then does a residual treatment make sense, and by that point there is usually very little left for it to do. Reverse the order and you have destroyed your own diagnostic: you cannot tell whether the odour is gone or merely buried, so the next person to work the aircraft starts from a worse position than you did. The cleaning itself is not a free action either. Gulfstream's completion center maintenance handbook tells you to test on an inconspicuous area first, because two fabrics of the same fibre content can behave differently, and not to take chlorine bleach aboard at all. Operator-side guidance rules out carpet spotters containing trichloroethylene or MEK outright, and warns that aggressive cleaning of carpet and seat covering materials, beater-bar vacuuming included, can remove the fire retardant.

Ozone is a tool, not a shortcut

Heavy oxidizing treatment is where good intentions do real damage. Ozone attacks the carbon-to-carbon double bonds in unsaturated elastomers, and the rubber industry tests for precisely this under ASTM D1149, holding a specimen under strain in a controlled ozone atmosphere and examining it for cracking. An aircraft cabin is a pressure vessel full of seals, certified soft goods and finished surfaces. The transport-category certification basis treats cabin ozone as something to be driven down rather than added: 14 CFR 25.832 requires that cabin ozone concentration not exceed 0.25 parts per million by volume, sea level equivalent, at any time above flight level 320, and 0.1 ppm sea level equivalent as a time-weighted average during any three-hour interval above flight level 270. Operators meet that by route and altitude limitation or by ozone converters in the air supply. 14 CFR 25.831(b) sits alongside it and requires cabin air to be free of harmful concentrations of gases or vapours. A shop that fills your cabin with ozone for an afternoon is deploying something the aeroplane is engineered to take back out of the air. We use it where it is appropriate, at controlled exposure, once the source has gone.

The failure mode: the source keeps working while you wait

Choosing fragrance for a cabin that has a genuine source costs you three separate things. The odour is still there, so you are treating again within weeks. The fragrance is now a second smell, and some passengers will object to it more than to the original. And the source has had those weeks sitting in place, which for a biological event or a fluid that reached the underlayment means the affected area is larger than it was when you first noticed it. Doing the job properly later is a bigger job than doing it properly now. That is the honest argument for the thorough route. It is done once, and the standard it reaches is the one that ends the problem.

What changes the answer

Sometimes the honest answer is that this is not a cleaning job at all. If the odour tracks with the environmental system running, if it is strongest at the outlets rather than in the furnishings, or if it smells of oil rather than of food or of a spill, the source may be the ECS, a bleed air path or an insulation blanket. That is a maintenance matter and we will say so rather than sell you a cabin treatment that cannot reach it. The other genuine change is a cabin that is already clean with no source at all. There, a light neutral note at the end of a detail is a presentation choice, and there is nothing wrong with it.

Choose when

Choose source treatment when the cabin has an odour that keeps coming back, when it is worse warm than cold, when it is worse in flight than on the ground, or when someone has already tried a spray and it returned. Choose it before a pre-purchase inspection or a charter debut, where a covered smell is worse than an admitted one.

Choose when

Choose fragrance only on a cabin that is already clean and has no source: a light, neutral note added at the end of a detail because you want the aircraft to smell of nothing. That is presentation, and it is legitimate. Do not choose it to solve anything. The moment it is covering something, it has stopped being a finish and become a delay.

Can you get rid of a cabin odour permanently?
Where the source is material we can reach, such as carpet, underlayment, foam, a galley drain or a lavatory seal, then yes, because the material holding it is gone or has been cleaned through. It does not come back, because it is no longer aboard. Where the source is the environmental system or an insulation blanket, it is a maintenance item and we will tell you so.
Do you use ozone or fogging?
Where it is appropriate, at controlled exposure, and never as the first move. Sufficient ozone exposure attacks unsaturated elastomers, which is the exact failure the rubber industry tests for under ASTM D1149, and a cabin is full of seals and certified soft goods. It is a finishing step on residual odour once the source has gone, not a substitute for finding it.
How long does source treatment take?
Longer than a spray, and most of that time is inspection rather than treatment. Expect a day or more on the ground, more if trim has to come off or carpet has to be lifted and dried. Drying cannot be rushed: carpet shrinks when it is dried much above 100F.
Would a buyer actually notice a masked cabin?
At a pre-purchase inspection, yes. An inspector who walks into a heavily scented cabin assumes something is underneath it and starts looking, which is a worse position than an honest smell you have disclosed. A cabin that smells of nothing at all is the one that inspects cleanly.
Why does it smell fine on the ramp and bad in the air?
Because release is driven by warmth, humidity and occupancy. A cold cabin on the ramp holds the molecule in the material. Thirty minutes into a flight, with the cabin warm and people in it, that material gives it back. Judge a cabin warm and occupied, never cold and empty.
