What a reset is, precisely
A trip-ready reset is a short, disciplined pass over an aircraft that is already sound. Cabin surfaces cleaned and dressed correctly by material, glass and acrylic done with chemistry that will not craze them, galley and lavatory serviced, carpet groomed, soft goods presented, leading edges wiped, and the exterior brought up with a dry or rinse-less wash. It is measured in hours. The limits are built into the method, not into the effort: a dry wash is the correct tool for airport film, dust and light soil, and expressly the wrong tool for heavy carbon, grease and oil around the exhaust. That work needs water, time and different chemistry.
The chemistry is qualified, not chosen
What goes on the aircraft during either job is decided before anyone arrives. Boeing's D6-17487 qualification puts an exterior cleaner, wax or polishing compound through a test battery: sandwich corrosion, with product-saturated filter paper held between faying aluminium surfaces through cyclic heat and humidity for seven days; immersion corrosion; acrylic crazing; paint softening; and hydrogen embrittlement to ASTM F519, four notched cadmium-plated specimens immersed for 150 hours at 45 per cent of load. SAE AMS 1526 covers the same ground for exterior cleaners, qualifying products that do not corrode aluminium, magnesium or steel alloys and do not attack acrylic glazing or paint. A consumer product cannot have passed a test it was never submitted to. That is the difference between a wash and an appearance program, and it does not show up in the first ten minutes.
What a full detail is, and why it takes days
A cabin is not one surface. Gulfstream's own completion center maintenance handbook carries separate cleaning procedures for wood, granite, Lexan, vinyl laminate, plating, stainless steel, leather, vinyl, rubber matting, carpet and fabric. That is eleven material problems inside one aircraft, each with its own chemistry, its own technique and its own way of being ruined. The same handbook warns that a silicone-based household polish leaves a residue on the urethane wood finish that can prevent later repair, and that the finish must be cleaned before every third polish application to stop build-up. Operator guidance goes further: aggressive cleaning of carpet and seat coverings, or a beater-bar vacuum, degrades the fire retardancy of those materials. That is not a cleaning error you can clean off. Work of this order is measured in crew-days, and on a midsize aircraft a full interior and exterior at this standard is a five-figure job before condition or deadline are factored in.
Outside, the budget you are spending is clearcoat
Aerospace basecoat and clearcoat systems build to roughly two to two and a half mils of dry film. Paint correction works by removing a fraction of that film, and the film is finite. The only way to replace it is a strip and repaint, typically five to seven weeks out of service. Manufacturers recommend repainting every five to six years; industry practice stretches to about seven, ten at the outside, and closer to four in salt-laden coastal air. A detail therefore has to be planned rather than repeated: corrected properly once, then protected and maintained, so the film lasts the life of the paint. Belly soils matter for the same reason. Hydraulic fluid, fuel and exhaust soot hold corrosive material against structure, and that is a maintenance question long before it is an appearance one.
The failure mode: buying the wrong product
Here is how owners get caught out. The aircraft has not had deep work in two years. A reset is booked because it is quick and it fits the schedule. The crew do exactly what a reset is, and afterwards the swirls are still in the paint, the leather is still hard and the veneer still looks tired, because none of that is what a reset does. The owner concludes the work was poor. The work was correct, and it was the wrong work. A reset is not a smaller detail, any more than a wash is a cheaper detail: a wash is hours and one crew member with one product, a detail is crew-days treating six or more materials as six different problems, plus correction and brightwork, carried by insurance at limits an FBO will accept. Describe the problem rather than the product, and this does not happen.
What changes the answer
Four things, mostly. Where the aircraft lives: hangared in dry air is a different aircraft from ramp-kept in Georgia humidity, and FAA corrosion guidance is explicit that holding relative humidity below seventy per cent and washing off acidic airborne contaminants is what keeps filiform corrosion under paint in check. What has just happened to it: maintenance events, long storage and paint work all leave marks a reset cannot address. What is about to happen to it: a sale, a pre-buy, an annual inspection or a photo shoot each raise the standard the aircraft is judged against. And how much slack the schedule has, because a detail needs the aircraft still.
Why the heavier route is the right call
Our recommendation is a full detail on a defined cycle, or around events, with resets between trips to hold the standard. Not because it is the lighter path, because it is not, but because nothing is ever allowed to bond, and recovery work is where the irreversible damage lives. Soil left to set in wool carpet needs aggressive chemistry to lift, and aggressive chemistry on carpet and seat coverings is what strips fire retardancy. Paint left swirled needs more correction, and correction spends film you cannot buy back. Brightwork left oxidized needs heavier polishing, and Alclad cladding is only two to five per cent of the sheet thickness before you are into the copper-bearing alloy underneath. Held to a schedule, the standard is maintained rather than recovered, and the aircraft gives up nothing permanent.
