Oxidation
The chalky, dulled surface layer that forms as paint or bare alloy reacts with oxygen and UV. On paint it presents as a loss of gloss and color depth; on brightwork as a grey haze.

Why it matters
Oxidation is removed mechanically, not chemically. Once it is present, washing will never restore the finish.
