Brightwork
Unpainted polished metal on an airframe — typically leading edges, engine nacelles, exhaust stacks and wing root fairings. Brightwork is bare alloy kept bright by mechanical polishing rather than by paint or clear coat, so it oxidizes continuously and needs periodic re-polishing rather than washing.

Why it matters
Neglected brightwork dulls to a grey haze that a wash will not touch. Restoring it is a multi-stage cut-and-polish job, so a maintenance interval is far cheaper than a recovery.
